There is a similar slipperyness issue in my leather jazz shoes in my opinion, actually. I only notice a prohibative difference when I wear my leather jazz shoes on Marley.
Canvas shoes also have that wonderful stretch canvas option, which was a lifesaver for me, as for some reason I've always had a hard time making ballet shoes fit my feet right, and the stretch canvas eliminated that problem. But I think it's one of those you-won't-know-unless-you-try sorts of things! I prefer canvas and so do my friends They also allow me to articulate through my feet better, and they make turning and jumping easier. At my studio, we are required to wear leather, but canvas makes my feet look nicer particularly in the heel.
I cheat a bit and I wear these nice shoes called Bloch Hybrids. They are very comfortable and have leather in the instep area for working your arches but they are canvas in the heel to make it easier to point your foot.
I have a friend who loves Capezio Juliets that are a softer leather, but mine split at the seam within 2 weeks after I bought them. I think that you should try a few different pairs on and decide what works best for you.
Good luck! Yes, there's a small period of adjustment. So don't switch on the evening of an exam or a performance. Barring that, it shouldn't take that long! I love the canvas ballet shoes much better then the leather. They look better on my feet. Try both of them on at the store, and see which one feels better and looks good on your feet. We're required to wear leather at my school as well, and I wear the capezio juliets. They fit really well, and make my feet look good!
I wear canvas shoes and i really love them as opposed to leather. My studio has some marley and some wood floors and canvas works well on both without any need for adjustment on the shoes. Leather tends to be stronger and help your feet get stronger when you wear them but they are also a lot stickier for turning and tendus. I also disagree that leather lasts longer than canvas.
Canvas shoes also look much better and allow your feet to breath more so they don't smell as much from sweat. I love canvas shoes. My studio has wooden floors so leather shoes are harder to turn in and can get awkwardly squeaky. They look great on my foot and I feel that my foot can breathe in them. It also helps that you can wash them.
I do feel that leather shoes last longer, however. They certainly are more durable and tougher to break in. However, during my research, I found that leather shoes are more dated and fewer, and fewer schools are requiring students to wear them.
Most of the instructors we spoke to said that there were several problems with leather shoes. They take more time to stretch and conform to the shape of your foot. Leather shoes also require you to take more care in selecting the correct fit because they need to be right in order to stretch properly.
