I personally have no strong opinion on this, but am curious to hear comments of what message the wearers want to send and think they send. Museum visitors were offered a choice of kimonos to be photographed in next to the painting. At the MFA, protesters and a good numbers of counter protesters sparred over exploitation versus celebration of Japanese culture in the form of a garment. This whole episode did leave me troubled in how nasty people would become over what someone else was wearing and how selective it was.
I assume the outcry over the kimonos was possible since protestors on both sides had extra time and felt sufficiently offended. Or would they actually believe that the Americans are too poor to buy clothes?

In vogue for quite some time, ripped jeans suddenly became the talk of town on Wednesday after Uttarakhand chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat ridiculed the clothing, calling it a bad influence. He further expressed his apprehension towards bare knees being exposed and went on to draw a parallel between the Indian and western culture.
It is one of those trends which may initially seems ridiculous, but manages to catch on. Celebrities too have been flaunting the ripped jeans and has been an essential of the much talked about airport fashion. In the early s, ripped jeans came back in style, as a 90s revival, but were sometimes introduced as Distressed - similar to ripped jeans, but the horizontal sewing point was occasionally removed to look like it was distressed.
Not all distressed jeans are worn as a fashion statement. Ripped jeans were simply a result of over-wearing. Prior to the 's , ripped jeans were mainly associated with the less fortunate. The lower end of the working class could not afford to part with their denim. Obviously, if a family cannot afford to purchase new pants, they may continue wearing them past the point of their own personal preference.
The grunge culture in the early 90s also added gas to the flame so there was no slowing down. With their scissors in hand, teenagers all over the country carefully carved out cuts and holes in their jeans as a form of self-expression. The trend lost a little steam afterward but like with most fashion trends, the ripped jeans have come full circle and are back in full force.
Why do people wear ripped jeans? Fans of this trend wear them for various reasons. This can be political because it may be perceived as a form of rebellion. For the rest of us, we wear ripped jeans because they complement our personal styles.
Or some of us have FOMO so we must jump on the latest trend to achieve a sense of belonging. You can find rips on skinny jeans , flare jeans, bootcut , baggy boyfriend, and even mom jeans.
Designers have given the people what they asked for by also ripping other items made from denim such as jackets, shorts, and skirts. This look is achieved by tearing holes into the material in strategic places typically both knees and one thigh, etc with the tears being partially repaired in some manner.
Some designers have actually placed denim patches in contrasting colors to fill the holes.
