Almost nobody else born in continued to gleam so radiantly as Brad and Johnny, but the news that such incandescence was still possible offered some small comfort. Pitt has had a few issues lately. The divorce from Angelina Jolie is looking messy. A recent GQ photoshoot had something of the midlife crisis about it. But he still seems like a class act.
In contrast, Depp is properly letting us down. A few photographs have shown evidence that middle-age can ravage even princes of the Hollywood uplands. Then there was that humiliating falling-out between Australia and the Depp dogs.
The case rumbled on for a year before the couple were issued with a fine and a warning. This was not the worst of it. Depp and Heard were compelled to apologise and urge others to canine vigilance in a video that set new standards for cringe-inducing insincerity. You just did not see Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton do this sort of thing in the s as Pitt, Depp and I are old enough to remember. Robert Mitchum spent a spell in jail. But he never had to prostrate himself to the Southern Hemisphere for indulging his smaller pets.
The Depp mystique was damaged. Since then, we have been made aware of much greater catastrophes. In short, it looks as if Mr Depp is going broke. How can this be possible?
A recent report in the Hollywood Reporter suggested he was doing just that. After being confronted with the terrifying reality, Depp agreed to sell a yacht. He was going to sell his chateau in Saint Tropez, but subsequently had second thoughts.
Spend half an hour reading this stuff and the figures lose all meaning. Depp desperately needs to prove that his face is still a marketable asset. But do people still want to see Depp — Tommy Cooper accent and Kohl-black eyes — balancing hilariously on a dangling plank as Captain Jack Sparrow?
That Hollywood Reporter piece groaned with embarrassing anecdotes. Disney had already backed away from a Pirates future with Depp well before the U. Disney balked. But the defamation ruling may have made his casting untenable. Waldman, who is married to Berlin-based jet-setter and luxury skin-care entrepreneur Barbara Sturm, conducts himself in an unorthodox manner, mocking his legal opponents on Twitter. They were artistic — they had bands! If we dated them, we understood that our role would be to understand their souls. He would never put it like this, but Depp cultivated this image. Nevertheless, 21 Jump Street was a huge hit, largely thanks to Depp.
Sunday evenings for me, growing up in the US, quickly became about watching Depp bust some drug-dealing adolescents. But there were reports from the set that he would refuse to do scenes, leading to him getting a reputation as difficult, but to us fans this just proved that he had an artistic soul and was better than the TV show although we also loved the TV show.
But to Depp it was hell. Plastered, postered, postured, patented, painted, plastic!! Novelty boy, franchise boy. In his next role, as Edward Scissorhands, he went further, entirely obscuring his good looks — not even James Dean did that — and relying instead on subtlety and acting skills, neither of which had been in much evidence on 21 Jump Street. But he was good, or certainly good enough, and in the 90s Depp carved out one of the more interesting careers a teen pinup has ever managed.
And he took his audience with him; a whole generation discovered indie films and auteurs through Depp. He was that rarest of things: a celebrity who was, genuinely, cool. He was also known as a romantic. We Depp fans loved Ryder. They made sense as a couple and, with her delicate gothic looks, she confirmed our image of him as a friend of the outsider as though a gorgeous Hollywood actress could ever really be considered an outsider.
We were less pleased when he started dating a model, which felt a bit lame, but at least it was Kate Moss, and at least she seemed absolutely bananas about him, clutching his arm on the Cannes red carpet. But again, we told ourselves, this was just his artistic nature.
