I think, originally, it wasn't necessarily that she was attracted to him, but simply wanted to know him better. Squall was the one who wound up pushing their relationship forward, as well as the Ragnarok incident.
And really, there's nothing wrong with Rinoa. If every female character is a rough and tough girl, that completely ruins the point of generalization, it just changes it into something that is just as bad as what it was before. The point is to see females not as a generic class of things, but to see them as people.
Rinoa is, very much, a person. She isn't simply a female, and just because she isn't as direct and aggressive as Lightning or Shantotto doesn't mean she's a poor character, or simply a female.
You miss the entire point if you think that everyone should be like Lightning or some variation of her. Personally, I don't hate her, I just think she has less odds of getting in. It's hard to tell what SE will do, but given they considered adding Seifer originally, coupled with being another physical attacker something SE seems to keep adding and a Chaos character, I could easily see them adding him for that reason alone.
Who can tell though, it's difficult to say what SE will do. Oh, I just wanted to clarify. Nothing wrong with disliking her. Anyone is welcome to dislike her. There is no evidence that her name was not supposed to be Rinoa from the start; it is pure speculation that her name was supposed to be Lenore, and was mistranslated to Rinoa. It shall be fixed. In the future I would like to be informed of something like this before judgement is cast. I see no reason for there to be a trivia about her resembling either Rinoa nor Aerith in either physique nor personality, as she is actually very different from them both, in both instances.
The only resemblance I see is about the "heart" sound in both Heartilly and Lockhart, which is really not relevant. Unless the designers of the characters are quoted as making a character resemble another on purpose, these kind of things should be noted as dependant on opinion, which really doesn't belong in a wikia article.

That's the claim given on Julia's page, but its absence from Rinoa's page makes me suspicious. Either it's false or it needs to be added to Rinoa. Like do they have passports? Birth certificates? Legally in many countries, such as the UK, you can change your name into anything as long as it's not offensive or something and don't really even need to do much paperwork for it, you can just decide you start to use a new name.
In some African countries, people's surnames don't even come from their parents, everyone just "invents" a surname when they are born. Since Rinoa quite obviously wants nothing to do with her father, it's no wonder she wants to be called Rinoa Heartilly instead.

As for the battle between the Gardens, most folks would have wanted a say in whether or not they died. I know I would have rather been on the battlefield wielding a weapon and having a say in my fate instead of hiding in a dormitory. People conveniently forget that all of the "rescue Rinoa" scenarios after the first one had direct effects on everything playing out as it did, meaning her needing to be rescued actually saved the world.
