I did a guest appearance with them, and they were headlining the [Rock Fest Barcelona] festival. And I read on the roster list that Queensryche was opening the festival. So I went out earlier in the day and watched their set.
It was the first time I'd seen the band play without me. He continued, "I'd never heard their new singer [ Todd La Torre ], but I watched them play and they were great, and that singer is fantastic. He's amazing! Are you going to form a new version of Queensryche, and possibly have two competing groups out there? Just to totally clarify, from your point of view, all the differences in the band were about money?
The other guys have very little input in what Queensryche does. They just sort of show up and play shows and collect a paycheck. But two of the guys are going through some personal issues. It would seem to many that firing the lead singer is sort of a suicide move.
When people buy a ticket to a concert they tend to want to hear the original singer. Why on earth would they cancel all remaining Queensryche shows? How are they gonna survive economically? Then they fired our publicist, our booking agent, they canceled all the shows, so now they have no income. What are they doing? If they had some sort of grand plan that all made sense, I could understand.
This is not something I want to do at all. I want to make records and I want to tour and live a creative life. I have no other way to go. What are they gonna do — hand it to some kid to sing? If you win the lawsuit and get the name rights, are you going to hire new musicians and tour again as Queensryche? Do you think any sort of reunion at any point in the future is even conceivable?
This is all pretty raw and new. Tell me about your new solo album. What does it sound like? It should be done in August. I just signed with InsideOutMusic. The album is very hard rock. Very metal, very hard rock, very modern. On your solo tour, are you gonna mix solo songs with Queensryche songs? Yeah, this will be my second solo album.
Are there any misconceptions about this split that you want to clear up? And also with the live shows, trying to make them interesting and unique and different, rather than just five guys up there playing songs, I tried to create a theatrical environment for the presentation.
And I think people like that. They want to keep seeing that. I can guarantee that. Newswire Powered by. Close the menu. Rolling Stone. Log In. To help keep your account secure, please log-in again.

I think they were playing at, like, three o'clock in the afternoon, and there was hardly anybody there, but it was really interesting to see them play. And their singer [ Todd La Torre ], God, he sounds just like me. It was very odd. But I'm glad I [saw them]. I got to say hi to all the guys — except Scott [ Rockenfield , drums]; he wasn't in the band anymore, I guess, at that time. It's a big backstage with all the drum risers there — you know how it is; they're rolling them in and out — and I saw him talking with Eddie.
And so I thought, 'Oh, that's interesting,' because, you know, with everything that went down, you never know how's that dynamic gonna be if we're ever in close proximity together. Just a heads up. I'm sure it'll be cool, hopefully. La Torre continued: "And so I saw him chatting with Eddie , and it was cool. And then we were going on, I don't know, maybe an hour, an hour and a half from that incident. And so our show started. He was stage left, so near Michael Wilton 's side of the stage, and he stood there, I would imagine, it seemed like probably the whole show.
I knew he was standing there watching. So afterward, the show was done and he came over, I exited the stage and he came over and kind of tapped me on the shoulder or something and said, 'Hey,' and put his hand out and said, 'We never really had a chance to meet, really.
And so I said, 'Okay. You're amazing! That's nice to hear. I said, 'Listen, for what it's worth, I have defended you.
